| Can you think of one SAC base other than Hq at Offit that wasn't located in God Forsaken North America? My base, Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX was the ONLY base in the Z.I. considered an "isolated tour of duty"! I was once told the reason for the bases being in the middle of nowhere was that any "suspicious person" would stand out like a sore thumb in an isolated community. At the height of the cold war I guess it made some sense but in hindsight it's laughable now. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The little small cottage I had there was supplied by the government. 169 Dickman Drive. Gone now as is all the Wherry Housing that housed families. It was nicknamed "weary housing" although it was comfortable enough for a newly assigned Lieutenant and his newly married bride...and eventually two newly arrived babies. Mixed memories of a godforsaken part of the US. Just checked the weather in Presque Isle. A balmy 23 going to -3 tonight. Spring !! |
