For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Ooops -should be addressed to "all" Maryland has approved gigantic wind turbines, increasing the size planned earlier, offshore from Ocean City. Heights now approved have their tip height at 853 feet, with rotor diameter of 721 feet. The earlier, smaller plan was the tip height of 641 feet and rotor diameter of 590 ft. Hub height of the smaller units were 374 feet, and are now at 492 feet. The new units are three times taller than the tallest building in Ocean City. They will require aerial hazard navigation lights, which the previously planned turbines did not. They are almost 30% higher than the largest example shown in the chart below -- (off the scale.) And that's 67% higher than the length of the Navy's modern destroyers, the Arleigh Burke class at 509 ft. Probably needs an elevator inside to hoist any service technicians. Can't expect them to climb ladders inside those massive towers, like they do for the land based wind turbines. The objections raised by Ocean City officials seems have been ignored, by the Md authorities. Image below from THemmick - Image Title: Height of Wind Turbines ![]() |
