agree 100%. As I said, and you more fully explained, people do in fact incorrectly use "race" and "class" interchangeably.
Of my 45+ year working life I worked for two of the largest corporations around. One for 25 years (at the time the largest retailer in the world) and the other for 18+ years (the largest cable provider in the US). In that time my observations were that both companies hired at least as many minorities as whites, and more female than males. We based our hiring decisions on the applicants qualifications, experience, and attitude. And in ALL cases, the start rate was the same. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I was affiliated with the United Negro College Fund for over four years. First, as their banker and then as an officer of the Fund. The director and I had many conversations about various racial problems. One thought he expressed has lived with me. "People often confuse 'race' with 'class'. "there are many black folks that I wouldn't want living next to me as, I am sure, there are many white folks you wouldn't want living next to you." Words to live by. BTW, his predecessor as director of the fund was Vernon Jordan, later to become famous as president of the National Urban League and, later still, a board member of numerous corporations. And of course, later still, a famous FOB Clinton. He was our guest at several lunches at Chase during those early years and was a fascinating guy. There would have been the ideal next door neighbor !! |
