Yet the Europeans are retreating from nuclear power. Plans are underway to phase out so many that its ridiculous. Especially a big concern now with Russian gas supplies being controlled/ curtailed by Putin, for political purposes. This winter many people in Europe are facing bitter cold in their homes. Germany has last minute efforts to rejuvenate some coal fired power plants from moth balls. But its doubtful to meet all needs on a timely schedule.
The political unpopularity of nuclear, along with European greenies emphasis on wind & solar has created this enormous power insufficiency. If Biden hadn't curtailed US energy supplies, we could have been shipping LNG gas by tanker ships over to help the Europeans. Would have changed the international energy equation hugely. Sad. Too much greenie influence, in cutting the US energy supply, is also at the center of the US economics problems. One of the big US problems for building nuclear is overly active regulatory agencies -- These seem the root cause behind lengthy build times. Also seems that the US approach is different than folks in the 1950's driving around in cars originally designed in the 1930's. I'd rather see innovations being applied to nuclear plants, and implementing "lessons learned" as the industry matures. In that respect, the European standardization of nuclear designing lags behind. Consider how Elon Musk made innovations in the space industry, with his new designs. Great strides forward. There's a half dozen or more companies experimenting, developing, designing & building the new concept modular nuclear units. We'll see which work the best, and may thrive or fail. Capitalism & competition at work. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Why can't we do what the did in Europe? They all sat down and reviewed various designs for nuclear power plants and, after selecting one as the best, they ALL built the exact same design plant. They can take a part from one plant and use it in another plant without any problems. We here in the U.S. however allowed every builder to use a different design resulting in LONG construction times and no interchangeability of parts because ALL parts were custom made! Maybe we need to take a page from the Europeans? |
