I have the 1990 concert on CD and tape; the tape is wonderous. The first time I played it I was gripped with the feeling that all Heaven stopped to witness the performance; Zeus gathered the gods and demanded they bear witness to an extraordinary event executed by mere mortals. As the group watched, Zeus slipped out the back door as was his wont. ![]() In his opening aria, José Carreras sings Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle"-- incredible. He had recently recovered from cancer; during the song he blew a thank You kiss to Heaven. The main event ends with Pavarotti singing nessun dorma. Of course it does; would he have had it any other way? |
