First, not everyone responds as you say they do. Second, it takes two to tango. Let's start the dance properly and perhaps everyone will follow, eh?
I'll readily admit that some of my fellow conservatives are hung up on posting links to obscure articles which, really, not everyone cares to read. This isn't supposed to be school. Of course it shouldn't be a place where we start our messages by tattling on our fellow members either, as you began your message here, so it is going to take cooperation and a bit of grace to make this a civil place. Again, civility is as civility does. Perhaps you feel dumped on because you are one of few liberals here. But if you want to forward the points of liberalism, why not discuss why you think the way you do, why something seems right, why something seems wrong, and so forth. Maybe we can inderstand each other better I realize that we, as a nation, have all gotten away from talking to each other like that, and instead crawl around in the weeds for dirt disguised as data to roll into balls to heave at each other. It's the national hobby, but how successful has that been? There is room for civility and discussion. And if no one else is doing it, some of us can start it. Now, I'm not saying no one is doing it, but we can push the discussion more in that direction. And by the way, just because someone doesn't use the words "this is my opinion" before every statement doesn't mean he is preaching something he got from stone tablets carved by God--and we should not necessarily challenge him on that basis. Do you say "what's your source?" to everyone who states something that sounds like a fact in your daily conversations? No, none of us do, unless it's something way outside the norm. We all have beliefs based on a million things--how we were raised, how we were socialized, the schools we attended, etc. I don't carrry a list around so I can tell everyone why I believe the way I do. That would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: If someone states something AS FACT (as Mark Mitchell did in Msg# 1171058) that I have not read or heard about, then just maybe I am willing to be educated and ask for the source. If it had been presented as an opinion, then I could easily say "I disagree, here is my opinion." In this forum, I don't often hear "This is my opinion. This is open to discussion. I would like to hear your opinion." Usually, posters here already have their heels dug in and they are not interested in discussing political topics of the day. When I post "What do you think of [any controversial political issue], I usually receive a diatribe containing links to right wing articles on right-wing off-the-wall sources, most of which are not even widely known. And many of the replies do not even relate to my original question. [Q: What do you think about Trump's speech. A: Hillary did this] There is no discussion of this is my opnion and here's why. I usually get these are the facts and no interest in discussion. If I post something on this right wing forum, I get the above response (if anything) and the rest give the orginal responder a one sentence pat on the back. This is not really what I consider a discussion. Isn't discussion one of the purposes of a forum? |
