Did you know that the rich & famous like Bill Gates and Al Gore are financially backing the startup synthetic meat industry.(?)  Plus there's Sir Richard Branson and some Hollywood actors putting big bucks into those new experimental lab meat companies.

At COP28 the topic of reducing the meat and agricultural emissions was being pushed by the UN, with presentations spanning an entire day of the conference.

Yet some of the pushbacks against restricting meat have been coming from scientists questioning the safety of synthetics. Also there’s lots of negative public reactions to lab-grown meat, across the US.

Among the scientists expressing concerns are Michael Hansen, Ph.D., senior staff scientist with Consumer Reports, and Tom Neltner, chemicals policy director at the Environmental Defense Fund.
Their concerns include:

• << while scientific papers have covered topics related to the (so called) cell-cultured meat, “none has actually analyzed the nutritional characteristics of the finished product”
• << FDA’s approval programs often bypass the public comment process & “ a company simply tells the FDA its product is safe, based on the company’s own documentation “
• << cells of an animal used in cell-cultured meat do not contain the immunity actions from the animal’s immune system, which could leave bio-reactor vats susceptible to bacteria like salmonella, fungi and worse unless antibiotics are used.

The science behind animal farts and burps releasing excessive methane into the air has also been an unproven theory.
Here’s some factors:

• << Data from the EPA shows that methane accounts for a small proportion of total greenhouse gas emissions.
• << And the farm animal’s methane emissions make up an even smaller proportion.
• << U.S. methane emissions have been in decline for three decades
• << Even if Americans were to stop eating meat entirely, the reduction in methane would be more than offset by China’s future increases in methane emissions

And even the NY Times has written reports expressing dubious views and anticipating public resistance.

Sorry green advocates, seems that synthetic meats are going to be a failure in many countries, including America. Just like the (hypocrites?) delegates to the COP28 conference dined on plenty of succulent real meat entries, I’d predict that Americans will be keeping their real meat favorites  on their menus.
