|My hope would be that some lessons are learned in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. What's done can't be undone, but maybe someone else's life can be saved if procedures can be refined.|

And I think they will carry that guilt with them whether deserved or not!
I know I sound callous here, Dale, but incidents like this play out in the media frequently. Police officers, primed to expect the worse by a 911 call such as this one, arrive on the scene and with no chance to obtain further intelligence, are confronted by the suspect. To them, it has to be shoot or get shot. The the TV gets filled with legitimately grieving family asking in their grief, ignorance and exquisite hindsight "Why did they have to shoot? Couldn't they see he was harmless?" The answer is simply "NO, and if we waited to see what he was going to do, it could have been our wives crying before the TV cameras, not you."
Now, is it possible that these officers acted incorrectly? Of course, and some kind of review board - hopefully with ALL the facts, not just a TV blurb - will tear their behavior apart looking to find what went wrong. If they are indeed at fault, I hope they do feel the guilt and the hard fist if justice as well.
