Seems the lifting of sanctions against Syria has much more support than your source mentions. (perhaps as it's a $$ site)
More inclusive views & reports include CNN & others: Headlines: Trump announces plan to lift punishing sanctions on Syria Click Here What would lifting US sanctions on Syria mean to the war-torn country? Click Here Experts react: Trump just announced the removal of all US sanctions on Syria. Click Here Recall that Syria's former leader, Assad, who pushed Syria's own civil war as well as military interference in Lebanon is now gone. And the country's new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been aligning with the peaceful mid-eastern countries, including Saudi Arabian officials. Its very apparent that humanitarian benefits would be promoted from lifting the punishing sanctions which had begun in 1979, and were made more strict in 2003 and 2019. Removal will help restore access to fuel, essential medicines, supplies, and equipment. Both the UK and the European Union have lifted some, but not all, of their sanctions on Syria earlier this year. Two senators from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — Repub. Jim Risch and Dem. Jeanne Shaheen — had encouraged the lifting before Trump’s trip. Lifting the sanctions would help Syrian interests become more aligned with the US and with other peace-loving allied middle-eastern nations. And thus, the waring factions of Iran would become more isolated. Seems this could become another positive step in international affairs for Trump. PS Sites that charge bucks should be nixed here, IMO. Try for alternatives.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Why are we playing nice with Saudi Arabia? Why would we remove sanctions on Syria at the request of murderer Prince Mohammed bin Salman? The end of sanctions on Syria would be a huge boost for a country that has been shattered by more than a decade of civil war. Rebels led by current President Ahmed al-Sharaa toppled President Bashar al-Assad last December. Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh at the start of a deals-focused trip that also brought a flurry of diplomacy, Trump said he was acting on a request to scrap the sanctions by Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Prince Mohammed bin Salman. "Oh what I do for the crown prince," Trump said, drawing laughs from the audience. He said the sanctions had served an important function but that it was now time for the country to move forward. The move represents a major U.S. policy shift. The U.S. declared Syria a state sponsor of terrorism in 1979, added sanctions in 2004 and imposed further sanctions after the civil war broke out in 2011. Trump heads to Saudi Arabia eyeing more investment in US: Syria: Trump Tower Damascus? Syria seeks to charm US president for sanctions relief DAMASCUS/WASHINGTON, May 11 (Reuters) - A Trump Tower in Damascus, a detente with Israel and U.S. access to Syria's oil and gas are part of Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa's strategic pitch to try to get face time with U.S. President Donald Trump during his trip to the Middle East, according to several sources familiar with the push to woo Washington. |
