For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Jim Of course the Biden folks like Antony Blinken are defending, because the political heat is being felt against that $6 billion of funds. They’re trying to float any reasons they can to justify that $6 billion booty. Because there’s so many criticisms being heard by the public and its gained traction, Biden’s group had to present their views defending Biden. Just like your message & quotes were trying to defend him. Shortly after the US unfroze the $6 billion for Iran in September, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi declared that Tehran would use the money “wherever we need it,” leading to concerns that the regime would spend the funds for nefarious purposes. Geez That says a lot. Seems the public doesn’t trust the idea that restrictions to humanitarian efforts would work. The conservative arguments are that dollars are interchangeable, are fungible – and attempted restrictions are full of holes. Cheating seems so easy. Also, it seems that when those funds were held by an ally, like the South Korea banking system, its been secure there since Sept 2019 – far more secure than in the Arab country of Qatar. Even after funds are spent for food & medicine, seems there’s little control to assure those products are not benefiting the terrorist rebels And members of Congress are now arguing for a bill to again freeze those funds. That puts an even heavier public spotlight onto the transfer of $6 billion. Its now deemed unwise in lots of current news stories. Critics who have been quoted in news stories included:
The Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank also voiced criticism: “the idea of making $10 billion available to the sponsor of all this evil makes little sense,” citing the 55 attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria by Iranian proxies since Oct. 17. The Washington Free Beacon asks: "Why should Iran have any access to more than $10 billion after sponsoring one of the worst terrorist attacks against American citizens and the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust? It would make more sense to freeze all of these accounts and keep every penny out of Tehran's hands." Folks like me were likely much more comfortable when our ally South Korea was holding those frozen funds. And Jim you were correct these were sanction penalty funds withheld from Iran, and not US funds. Of course the sanctions were leverage intended to help control or restrain Iran’s international mischief & terrorism. Seems Biden is also showing no respect for those restraints, and we’re seeing how Iran is right in the middle of supporting & financing the current terrorism & war against Israel. |
