Naval Academy Book Banning In early April 2025, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, removed 381 books from its library following a directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office to eliminate materials promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The removal was based on a list of search terms provided by a temporary Academic Libraries Committee, including terms like affirmative action, critical race theory, gender identity, and white privilege. The banned books covered topics such as the Holocaust, civil rights, feminism, and racism, including notable titles like Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Ron Stallworth’s The Gangs of Zion. Most of those book have been returned to the shelves, but the above paragraph indicates the mentality of the current administration. For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: October 7 begins Banned Books Week. First, read Fahrenheit 451. Our nation is heading in that direction, now. Then, read a banned book to see if it expands you thinking in a positive way. Image below from Jim Matthews - Image Title: Books and Thinking Image Info: Books help you to think, learn, and grow.
