For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Dave (and All) YES There's several examples where the comparison EV vs gas fire reports have ignored mentioning factors making the EV fires worse. << That spontaneous burning of EV's means there's no warning, even for the most meticulous owners who keep their vehicles in tip top shape with first class maintenance. Can't be foreseen, nor predicted, nor prevented. << The whole EV fleet of vehicles is much newer age than gas powered. Thus wear & tear, plus the older age of those Internal combustion engines (ICE) cars are distorting the comparison. And folks driving the oldest gas vehicles are the poorer folks who may let maintenance slip by, due to lack of funds for the fixes. << Hybrids have been around much longer than EV's; and they indeed show a very poor record, with some highest averages for fires -- (within some studies.) << Fire officials are now training their crews, alerting them to the much greater water needed to fight EV fires. That's caused by the chain reactions within the massive EV batteries. Those lithium-ion batteries often keep re-igniting, until totally burning up the entire vehicle. Fire officials have thus been saying -- move the burning EV away from other flammable surroundings, as its often likely to burn for quite a while, until consuming the whole elec. vehicle. << The gas & ICE vehicles have no such warnings from fire officials. Seems that many CO2 & dry powder fire extinguishers are rated for gasoline fires, and they can quickly produce control. Thus seems less consequences & damages, when those gas fires are quickly put out. << Some EV fires have burned for days, or have been known to re-ignite days later. Thus prompt removal of the burned vehicle skeleton is necessary. as well as storage in an isolated location. This precaution is necessary to avoid the fire from spreading or causing additional damage. Folks should be cautious in reading such EV vs gas vehicles comparison reports. The devil is in the details. And the green interests are biased in NOT telling the whole story. |
