I was always a bit confused by what Harry L said and your comment helps. I find that rather fascinating and i guess it goes to show how much the country has changed as well as how little I really know about how things used to be . it seems surreal to imagine so much effort and care spent on defending cities and very hard for my poor brain to comprehend. makes one wonder why they stopped such defenses and what authority made the decision… thanks again for your comment and I do love to learn as much as I can! It is kind of fascinating to hear about ways of life during those eras… Doug |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: During the 50's and early 60's Philadelphia was ringed with radars that controlled 90MM anti aircraft guns then from about '55 or '56 they went to missile batteries, I think they were called "Nikes"? I'm betting all major cities had the same protections. If they could bring down high flying Russian bombers civilian aircraft would have been child's play! |
